Hello friends! I had a wonderful day of rest today, filled with fun, friends, self-care, and great food! I was also able to get a whole lot of cleaning and organizing done in the kitchen for this Home Organization Challenge I’m participating in, hosted by A Bowl Full of Lemons. If you’d like to catch up on my progress so far or learn about this challenge in a nutshell, check out my previous post here.
Here’s the progress!
This was our food storage/baking stuff/general crap cabinet before. As you can see, I didn’t bother to tidy up for the before picture.
That’s…a lot of crap…
And here’s the after product!
As you can see, all of the baking pans and mixing bowls are all organized on the left side of the cabinet in a three-tiered shelving unit, making it easier to just grab the pan we need. Also, all of our lesser used baking ware is stored underneath the measuring cups and food storage containers and we are able to make more space for storage by using a wire kitchen shelf.
But seriously, check out the genius of this arrangement!
Before, the KitchenAid mixer was cluttering up our counters, and we only use the mixer once or twice a month. The beauty of this arrangement is that most likely, we will only need to access baking pans and mixing bowls when we need to use the KitchenAid mixer, so the mixer isn’t blocking anything by being where it is in the cabinet. Streamlining at its’ finest! I love how everything we need for baking is all in one cabinet! And also, our juicer, which we’ve been using more regularly, fits right in front of the food storage containers, still allowing them to be easily accessible.
The junk drawers were definitely a mess. In this particular drawer, I’d just throw my random canning lids and anything grill or hardware related.
This is what the drawer looks like now. As you can see, the meat thermometer has found a home with the rest of the outside grilling tools!
This is the middle junk drawer, filled with tons of appliance manuals (you know…just in case…), recipes I’d clipped but somehow never managed to look at, coffee filters, and random junk.
This is what the drawer looks like now.
I completely trashed all of the clipped out recipes, figuring if they hadn’t been important enough to utilize up until this point, I could probably live without them. I also filed the product manuals into a separate filing system and tossed a lot of junk. It is now it’s own “wrap” and disposable food storage (and toothpick??) drawer, which were all taking up space in many other drawers just a week ago. Love consolidation!!!
And the last junk drawer, filled with packing supplies, scissors, tape, pens, tons of papers, and cleaning supplies…
Papers thrown out, separate little containers for rubber bands and hardware, and general order, and this is what you get!
This was our “medium appliance” and “anything-that-doesn’t-fit-anywhere-else” cabinet. Not really any rhyme or reason.
This is what the cabinet looks like now.
We got rid of some empty boxes that weren’t being used and stored some very infrequently used appliances in the garage, helping free up a ton of space. We also consolidated items that were previously in this cabinet with other like-items so we only need to hit up one cabinet for a particular task (AKA cookie cooling racks with cookie sheets).
This was our stove before.
Unclean, a few clean empty pots, and yikes, is that leftover chili?? (I had literally just made chili right before taking this picture)
A nice deep clean, and a new home for pots and pans later, and voila! Just like new! This was our pots and pans cabinet, with some bakeware and platters thrown in and scattered before. Pretty poor use of space.
This is officially the new home for all of our pots and pans!
Before, neither of our two extra large pots would fit down here (we entertain the masses a lot). Now that we’ve consolidated the cake pans and muffin tins elsewhere and utilized the tiered wire shelving, we have room for all! As well as room for some of our shallower baking pans.
This was our microwave station before. I told you, I didn’t bother tidying up before taking the before pictures!
After putting everything in its’ new place and deep cleaning the counters and cabinets, this is what it looks like now.
This is our main countertop. As you can see, the KitchenAid mixer is in the far corner, and the surface is cluttered with items that don’t have a home or have been just left out.
Now, everything has a home and has been put away, and the counters and cabinets have all been deep cleaned!
A close up of the countertop.
This is our kitchen cart, which holds all of our spices and cooking tools. It’s a little cluttered here.
After being neatened up and finding a new home for the knife block…
This is the inside of our kitchen cart, filled with random spices, oils, baking ingredients, syrups, and alcohol. Just completely random.
Now our kitchen cart houses all of our baking ingredients, our baked goods (bread, tortillas, English muffins), my recipe books and recipe file, which were previously cluttering the top of the fridge, and all of our hard alcohol and syrups!
This is the twin sister of the last post’s displayed cabinet. At this point, it messily housed our Magic Bullet, our Middle Eastern tea cups, our tea and coffee stash, our mismatched wine glasses, our coffee mugs, and our serving dishes.
This is what it looks like now.
It’s still a little cluttered, but there’s more breathing room in the cabinet. RJ consolidated our teas in a clear bin that we bought from Bed Bath and Beyond, and all of the random hot powdered drinks we have are all together. We’re hoping to get another clear bin to hold the rest of our drinks, but for now, this is a huge improvement in that it doesn’t look like our tea and coffee stash barfed everywhere in the cabinet.
And these were some other cleanup projects that didn’t have before pictures.
For the freezer, I took everything out, cleaned the freezer, tossed out old food, sent some extra frozen food into our garage fridge, reorganized and stacked packages, and took inventory of items in our freezer so I don’t keep buying more ground turkey when we already have like 2 pounds in our freezer and I just can’t see it because there’s so much stuffed in there.
I wish I had a before picture of this cabinet, because it was pretty cluttered. But I’m sure you can imagine what it looked like, given my other “before” pictures. Just use your imagination. I consolidated all of our cooking oils, vinegars, and some spices into this one small cabinet right by the stove, which is huge since they were all scattered in different places, taking up room in other cabinets before. Now it’s all in one place, which I love!
We are almost done with the kitchen challenge! All we have to do is clean and organize underneath the sink, clean and organize the fridge, take down the photos on our fridge, clean and organize the medicine cabinet, and deep clean the inside of the stove, which we will hopefully accomplish tomorrow.
I’m pretty amazed by our progress so far, and I’m loving how organized I feel when my space is more organized!
If you have the time and motivation, it’s not too late to join me!! I’d love some company as I grow in home organization! :)
