[This is the second and final part of my “Taste of Ohio” epic meal-time series. You can find the first part, a recipe for Cincinnati chili, here.]
I don’t know how in the 28 years (at the time) I had been alive that I never knew about Buckeyes, another native Ohio treat. I mean, good heavens, I lived in Ohio at one point!! (True story, but only for like 1.5 years…from age 2 to 3.5…hahaha) But within a year of meeting my Ohio-an (I finally figured out what someone from Ohio is called!!) friend, Dan, I was introduced to the amazing, luscious, rich, chocolatey, peanut-buttery, creamy goodness.
Think Reese’s peanut-butter cup…but way better!
Oh yeah, and it kind of looks like a real buckeye too! Which is the state “something” for Ohio.
The week before having our friends over for dinner, I stumbled upon a recipe for Buckeye brownies on Pinterest (you can find the original recipe here).
Whaaat..merging the already delicious brownie with the rich, creamy, chocolatey, and peanut-buttery Buckeye for a party in my mouth?? Yes, please!!
You too can have a party in your mouth! Here’s what you’ll need to make this goodness.
- 1 package brownie mix (enough for a 9″x13″ pan) and whatever you need to make the brownies
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup plus 6 Tbsp butter, softened and divided
- 8 oz. jar creamy peanut butter
- 6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips
First, prepare and bake the brownie mix in a greased 9″x13″ pan according to the directions on the package. Let cool.
Mix the powdered sugar, 1/2 cup butter, and peanut butter well.
Spread the peanut butter sugar
ball mixture over cooled brownies. Chill for one hour in the refrigerator.
This is what it’ll look like when you’re done spreading the mixture over the cooled brownie.
Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and the remaining 6 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally.
Spread evenly over peanut butter and brownie layers.
After cooling, cut into squares. Yields about 2 to 3 dozen Buckeye brownies.
Now I know the serving size seems a little small, but don’t be fooled: these Buckeye brownies pack a big flavor punch! They are rich and dense, and in my opinion (and please don’t stone me, Ohio natives!), superior to the OG Buckeye. You get everything that you love about the Buckeye, plus brownie! Who wouldn’t love that??
These Buckeye brownies were quite a hit on the evening we had Dan and his beautiful fiancee over. Give them a try, and let me know what you think. You can find a printable recipe down below!
And hey, why don’t you make an Ohio-themed evening out of it and pair it with some Cincinnati style chili?? ;)
