All you Asian women out there, have you ever gone for a makeover in a department store, given by a nice, albeit pushy, non-Asian and come out looking like Mimi from the Drew Carey Show? I totally understand, it’s happened countless times to me! After a while, I just stopped trusting non-Asians with my make-up, especially to handle my non-double eyelided eyes. But if the experts can’t help us Asian women, who can?
I love make-up. I love playing with make-up, I love experimenting, I love using people’s faces as clean canvases for me to be creative with. I love working with people who don’t usually wear make-up and accentuating their God-given features. I love make-up!
I used to be such a doofus when it came to make-up, completely clueless. In fact, I didn’t really get into make-up until college, when I moved in with some of my favorite girls, Snuggles, Weird Noise Anjo, and Invisible Anjo. Before living with them, I had settled in my heart that my lack of a double eyelid would result in me never being able to wear make-up. HOWEVER, they opened my world to the possibilities for Asian women and make-up! I credit awakening the make-up beast in me to all of them. =)
I thought I’d add make-up reviews and tips to my blog, you know, just to help out those who feel clueless when they approach the aisles after aisles of endless possibilities, especially those of the Asian persuasion. I used to be clueless myself, but it’s all about empowering women, to give them a place to begin so they can gain confidence in this area. Once I gained confidence in trying make-up out and making choices at the drugstore or Sephora, new worlds were opened up to me! I started to be more daring, to risk, to try new techniques and products…and instead of being anxiety-producing, I’m having so much fun!
I thought I’d begin by reviewing my most recent purchase: Make Up Forever’s Aqua Eyes.
I have oily eyelids. Asians have oilier skin, resulting in oily eyelids. Oily eyelids lead to eyeliner easily smudging and smearing, leading to unattractive raccoon eyes. Because of that, I am ALWAYS on the hunt for a good eyeliner, which can be a pain in the buttocks because they are hard to find!
I thought I’d give Make Up Forever’s Aqua Eyes a chance, seeing as how it had won a Glammie (Glamour magazine’s top choice in eyeliner) and an award from Allure magazine. It is a waterproof (of COURSE) eyeliner pencil. For some reason, I’ve just always found pencil liners to run smoother than the retractable eyeliners. Anywho…
Creamy, but not too creamy. Goes on smooth, but doesn’t smudge easily initially. Pretty easy to put on, and comes in a variety of fun colors.
It didn’t hold up well to my oily eyelids. After a few hours, it smudges, but not in a sexy, smokey eyed way. It fades especially after you nap, which maybe most people don’t nap, or come to expect this from a liner after napping, but I want my eyeliner to stay put so when I wake up I am ready to go! As mentioned, it fades throughout the day, so you need to keep reapplying it. It’s also a bit pricey at $17.
Sorry Glammies and Allure magazine, I am definitely going to have to disagree with you on this one. It starts out great, but in the end it really disappointed me. If I’m paying $17 for a liner I constantly need to reapply, I’d just be stupid. I’d rather buy a cheap drugstore eyeliner if that were the case.
